VOLUNTEERING/WORKING
Volunteer Benefits:
Since Katie's Klothesline does not have 'employees', our event is operated by volunteers. Why volunteer? What is in it for you?
By consigning with Katie's Klothesline you are not required to volunteer, but if you are a consignor AND a volunteer your sales percentage goes from 65% to 70%. Volunteer shifts are in 4-hour time slots. You must complete the entire time slot before you earn your extra 5% bonus.
When volunteering you also earn the right to shop early. Consignors also get to shop early, but volunteers shop earlier than consignors. Working 2 or more shifts gains you the right to shop earlier than a 1-shift volunteer. There are many different jobs to be done before, during and after the event is over. It takes a lot of organization and time and 'people-power' to conduct this event. We welcome all good, hard-working volunteers to join the fun!
Please check the schedule to see what is the best fit for you. We do ask that you try to help us spread out the work. So if you see a shift that already has a few workers, then please sign up for another shift that needs someone.
Volunteer Options:
Flyers:
We also have a volunteer options that will not be on the schedule. We will need help circulating the many flyers that will be handed out at local daycares and preschools. We will package these in groups of 10 locations. We ask that you deliver them to the office of each location and ask them to 'backpack' the flyers or send them home with the kids. If this is something that you can do, please contact Katie either by phone or email to arrange pick up. These will need to be delivered at least 3 weeks before the sale starts. This way if anyone who receives a flyer wishes to consign they will have plenty of time to get organized.
Working a Shift:
The shifts on the volunteer schedule are mostly in 4-hour time slots. There are a few that are 3 hours and Sorting is an 'open-ended' slot. In order to claim a volunteer slot you must fill out your contact information on the slot selected, and please fill this out completely. I need to be able to contact you. You will need to sign in/sign out for your shift so that I will know that your shift was completed in its entirety.
Volunteer Descriptions:
Sorters: The sorting shift is one of the most important jobs we have. This is how the consignors get their items back in a neat, orderly fashion. We start this shift as soon as we close for business on the last shopping day. This is a shift that is available to as many as 14 volunteers. We sort until we are done. The more help we have, the sooner we can all go home. Supper is also provided during this shift. Sorters are one of the first groups of volunteers to shop.
Check-in: When working check-in, organization is a must. You will be required to inspect items to see if they are suitable for the type of sale we are trying to offer, make sure the proper forms for each consignor are completed, have the barcodes printed for the consignor to apply to their string tags, and make sure the proper shopping passes are given to each consignor.
Shopping Days: This time slot covers a variety of things. We need for volunteers to help keep the store in shape such as watching for lost tags on the floor or putting items back in their appropriate spot or just simply having their presence deter theft. Also, we have need for baggers, item counters, and price tag removers. You will be assigned one of these jobs after you arrive.
Store Prep: During this time we are making our final arrangements of how the store will look when we are ready to open. During check-in things don't always end up in the right spot. We use this time to make sure all clothes are neatly hung on the proper rack, racks are where they are most useful, toys and books are where they should be, and we make sure that the store has a good flow. This is usually a fast-moving shift. You must be able to take direction well, take charge of a messy situation and make it better, and move fast while doing it. Sometimes we get pressed for time and use every minute of this shift to get the store in order.
Pick-up Day: This is the time slot when all consignors who are not donating to charity pick up their leftover items. All items should be sorted according to consignor number and labelled on the floor. You will either be helping consignors locate their items, gather their final paperwork & check or helping to break down tables & racks as they are emptied.
As you can see there are lots of options to choose from depending on the type of work you want to do. We need lots of help to make this event a success, and we rely on Volunteers to make it happen! Check the schedule to see where you fit!
